The word from La Founder: I know Olivia for over a decade now. We met in a feverish Shanghai in 2008, we worked together, we partied together, we became friends and we remained connected to each other, between Paris, Shanghai and now Chiangmai in Thailand. When she launched Bubble Mood, I loved the concept right away, and I have been wearing her designs every summer like a ritual. I love the prints, the colors, the ease, the fabrics, and this special sparkle that lits up when I put my kimono on. I love knowing it is made in a sustainable way, and supporting local communities and craftmanship in Thailand. Since I launched Les Brand Makers, she has been supporting me, as a friend but also as a partner. And we are now working together to develop Bubble Mood with some really exciting projects, “brand making” with four hands. Stay tuned! I called it entrepreneur sisterhood at its best.
Your astrological sign:
A special feature about you:
I am full of contradictions. But the good ones!
Your credo/mantra in life:
Avoid regrets, as much as you can. And laugh, a lot. Don’t take things too seriously, as much as possible, but while doing things you love very seriously.
Why you love your job/craft? Or why you have chosen this path?
I love to create. Fashion came to me randomly and I use it as a mean to express values that seem important for me. I do it by avoiding to fall into clichés, or by diverting it from its primary usage. That does not interest me so much in the end. What I love about this job is the relationship I create with materials, the search for the right cut, the balance in a print, it is also looking for the right inspirations, shapes and fabrics. I love when people take ownership of my designs, that it become part of who they are and important moments in their life. In my process, I like that people see the clothing piece as an outfit, a whole set for everyday’s life rather than a mere consumption good, lost within the mass consumption lifestyle.
A special project you loved doing:
I left home to live at 12 000 km away in Asia for ten years now. It is a project that became a life, although it was not the idea at the beginning at all! And it is a project that shaped and influenced all the other projects of my life, like a common ground of what I have build since that departure. It is quite daunting, sometimes it is hard, but it gives you strength and character with a hint of schizophrenia!
An anecdote you would like to share:
I wanted to be a screenwriter and live in Paris. No I create kimonos and live in Chiang Mai. Who knows, maybe I will write one day a story about kimonos!
A special person/encounter, or a mentor/partner:
Lucas, my husband.
Promise at dawn and Life before us, Romain Gary. Karamazov brothers, by Dostoïevski. Murakami. La 7ème fonction du langage, Laurent Binet. I have a bad memory so I am choosing here the ones I’ve read or re-read recently. If we talk again in two years, the list would be completely different.
IMPOSSIBLE to choose only one! I’ve tried and that’s probably why it took me so long to finish this interview because as soon as I am thinking about a movie, I have this bad feeling that I am betraying all the others. So no, that’s impossible!
Favorite TV show:
There are so many but I would say The Knick because it is like nothing else, like an UFO, perfectly executed, impossible to classify.
Favorite song/music artist to listen to for work:
Radio Meuh. The selection is great, and no ads.
Favorite song to dance to:
I love food in général and all sorts of it. But if I had to choose only one, I would say (very good) bread with (very good) cheese. If I don’t have the choice, I would probably feed yself only with that!
Red wine. Well obviously, from France, and from small wineyards that are surprising but with no pretention.
Favorite city, a place you love in that city:
Paris, without any doubt because I don’t live there anymore and so I am never disappointed to see it again. I find it always so beautiful, and so inspiring for Bubble Mood.
Les Arlots, rue du Faubourg Poissonnière, in Paris.
Favorite brand or brand of the moment, and why:
I am a bad example, I am not very faithful to brands and I am more and more into vintage and thrift stores. In order to contribute a bit to the slow fashion movement against the over-consumption mass trends. I had my shopaholic times, I am over it. I buy very few things now. If I had to pick one brand, I would say Isabel Marant.
A guilty pleasure
Smoke a cigarette while drinking a glass of wine. And take a nap.
